Diddy League 16th March 2008
At 8 o'clock on a chilly, wet Sunday morning, 27 young athletes from the Diddy League Team gathered outside the Dolphin Centre to board the bus to Newcastle City Baths to take part in the second round of the competition. Despite the weather the spirits were high as we all looked forward to what we knew was going to be a tough test for our young stars of tomorrow.
For many of our swimmers this years Diddy League is their first taste of competitive swimming and a sharp introduction to just how good the swimmers from our surrounding clubs can be. It is also a first taste of supporting young swimmers for many of our parents and hopefully it is the start of many more trips to galas for everyone.
Throughout the morning we saw magnificent commitment and team spirit from all the swimmers in what is a fast and frantic event. Several of our swimmers were filling gaps in the teams by swimming strokes that are not their first choice and unfortunately we were unable to enter a 9 year old boys team due to lack of numbers which cost us valuable points. Having said that the opposition was very strong and overall we didn't get the result we all wanted.
The club coaches were there in force to organise the team and see first hand how the swimmers got on. Fiona Miller (Head Coach) said after the event "The Junior League is vital to the future of every swimming club as these are the swimmers that we want to develop and become the top squads representing our club in senior competition. I am tremendously proud of everyone of my swimmers today but there is much work to be done to support and develop these young athletes so that we can compete on equal terms with the best. We had an individual victory, some close second places and a relay event victory today but this is a team event and our aim for the future is to see us winning this league with pride and gaining promotion back into the first division as soon as possible. Well done to everyone who took part today and thank you to all our parents and supporters who cheered them on so magnificently".
